The Daniel Jones Era Is Likely Over for the New York Giants

The New York Giants entered Sunday’s Week 10 game in Germany 2-7 against the lowly Carolina Panthers, with a potential win salvaging what’s left of what appears to be yet another lost season. Instead, New York lost in dramatic fashion in overtime 20-17, dropping to 2-8 and sits in contention for the No. 1 overall draft pick in the spring.
While quarterback Daniel Jones may have bought himself some more time as a starter last week after a 20-for-26, two-touchdown performance, he collapsed in Germany. Jones completed 22 passes on 37 attempts, going for just 190 yards and two costly interceptions. The former sixth-overall pick was also embarrassed on a desperation flea flicker attempt in which he had two receivers open, getting sacked instead and sealing New York’s fate.

The Giants fell to 3-13 in the last 16 games Jones has started, as he missed most of last season with a neck injury followed by a torn ACL. This came on the heels of a massive four-year, $160 million extension signed prior to the 2023 campaign, one the team now is coming to grips with as one of the worst contracts in NFL history. Moreover, if Jones is injured from this point going forward, he’ll have a $23 million injury guarantee kick in for next season, meaning the team would be unable to get out of the deal this coming offseason as many suggest they may.
Fans were quick to get on Jones’ case following the lowly loss to Carolina.

The Giants will have a bye next week, followed by a Nov. 24 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are 24-44-1 with Jones as a starter and 5-6 the last two seasons when he’s on the bench or injured. There is a legitimate concern his starting job is in jeopardy, and head coach Brian Daboll did not commit to him being their starter in Week 12.
Brian Daboll is asked if the Daniel Jones is still the #Giants starting quarterback. He says he and the coaching staff are evaluating everything during the bye week. Doesn’t commit

Brian Daboll is asked if the quarterback decision is about giving the team the best chance to win. Does not to commit to an answer there. Says they’ll review everything. Eventually says they’ll make the best decision for their team #Giants

Should the Giants sit Jones, it’s unclear whether or not he’ll be replaced by veteran journeyman Drew Lock or by last year’s Cinderella story, Tommy DeVito. DeVito started nine games as a rookie, throwing eight touchdowns alongside three picks. He did, however, get sacked 37 times. The three games he helped New York win jettisoned them out of top draft position, though, and they missed out on selecting top quarterback picks such as Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels.
The Giants are bad.
The Giants are boring.
Bench Daniel Jones.
Put Tommy DeVito in the game.
The world has seen enough!

The 27-year-old Jones secured his big contract after leading the Giants to an unexpected playoff run in 2022, where they beat the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round.
