WWE Hall of Famer Eddie Guerrero Remembered on Anniversary of His Death

The pro wrestling world was left in a state of shock 19 years ago Wednesday when WWE Hall of Famer Eddie Guerrero died suddenly at age 38. Guerrero had been on the road touring with WWE at the time, and was discovered by his nephew Chavo unresponsive in his Minneapolis hotel room as a result of a cardiac event.

Guerrero’s death was a transformative moment for generations of wrestling fans, as he is widely considered one of the most influential performers of his era. Fans around the world took to social media Thursday to honor his legacy.

Guerrero entered the wrestling industry through the influence of his family. His father Gory Guerrero is considered to be an all-time great lucha libre performer in Mexico, while Eddie’s brothers and other family members followed suit to honor Gory’s legacy. Eddie would make a name for himself in Mexico and across the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s for his innovative hybrid style, eventually catching on in ECW and WCW as a cruiserweight.

“Latino Heat” had a career most would be envious of, but his peak of fame came upon jumping to WWE, where he would go on to become one of the company’s most unexpected world champions. Fans and wrestlers alike remembered some of their favorite Eddie moments Wednesday.

Guerrero’s story was an inspirational one for many. He battled personal demons over the course of his life, and was even released from WWE after his first run with the company due to issues with addiction. He would work to overcome them and use his battle as a tool to motivate others.

The former WWE Champion was well-respected across the industry and was pivotal in helping multiple organizations gain early prominence, such as Ring of Honor.
