The Top 10 Greatest WWE Tag Teams of All Time

While many pro wrestling fans attend events for the marquee names in the main event, the very backbone of the industry was built on the success of tag team wrestling. Tag team wrestling encompasses the battle of good vs. evil in a way few other matches can, with fans anxiously awaiting the “hot tag” to see the babyface come in and clean house.
As far as WWE is concerned, tag team wrestling has been a hot and cold item over the years. But the last 35 years have seen some of the biggest names in wrestling history make the way to the company to compete at the highest stage, and some of those all-time great tag teams were built inside a WWE ring.
1. The Hardy Boyz
Matt and Jeff Hardy are still some of the biggest draws in pro wrestling today, more than 30 years after they began their careers in the backwoods of North Carolina. Their imprint on WWE’s tag division is a legacy that will last generations.
The counterculture style of the Hardy Boyz made them one of the most identifiable tag teams in wrestling history. They are eight-time WWE Tag Team Champions and innovators of the iconic Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. The inaugural tag team ladder match at No Mercy 1999 between the Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian is one of the most influential matches in pro wrestling history, changing the perception of ladder matches in wrestling forever. Both Jeff and Matt would find singles success as well, with Matt winning the ECW Championship in WWE, and Jeff being a two-time World Heavyweight Champion and one-time WWE Champion.
2. Edge & Christian
If the Hardy Boyz were Batman, Edge & Christian were the Joker. The two made up one of WWE’s all-time great tag teams and left quite the reputation in a short time teaming together.
Edge & Christian were real-life best friends growing up in Canada, but only teamed together in WWE from 1999 through 2001. They won the WWE Tag Team Championship seven times in that duration, evolving from members of The Brood to one of WWE’s most entertaining tandems with their “Five-Second Pose” and wearing outlandish costumes. Moreover, these two could go in the ring with the best of them, using chairs as their weapon of choice in combating the Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz. Both became world champions in WWE as well.
3. The Dudley Boyz
You can’t have a TLC match without the tables, and the Dudley Boyz were never afraid to bring some hardware from the lumberyard to a WWE ring.
Bubba Ray and D-Von were wildly successful in ECW, but made the jump to WWE in 1999 to add a new dynamic to the tag division. Their historic tag team tables match with the Hardy Boyz at the Royal Rumble 2000 pay-per-view lit up Madison Square Garden, and the two teams, plus Edge & Christian, would go on to make some of the most memorable moments of the Attitude Era. They are nine-time WWE Tag Team Champions, and their 3D finisher is among the most protected moves in WWE history. Between WWE, ECW, TNA, and New Japan Pro Wrestling, there’s an argument to be made that the Dudley Boyz may be the most decorated tag team ever.
4. The New Day
The New Day were never intended to reach the levels of success they would ultimately achieve. But once their in-ring days are over, it’s impossible to suggest the trio of Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E won’t go down as all-time greats.
They debuted in 2015 under a preacher’s presentation, using positivity to inspire others to achieve greatness. The gimmick failed and was rejected immediately by fans. The three would turn heel, though, leaning into an over-the-top nature that saw them gain fan adoration over time. Once that happened, they showcased their immense talent in feuds with The Usos, The Bar, The Wyatt family, and others. They would become 12-time tag team champions, with Kingston and Big E each winning the WWE Championship in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
5. The Usos
Jimmy and Jey Uso are the longest-reigning WWE Tag Team Champions ever, with their memorable 622-day stand propelling them high on this list.
The Usos came into WWE as the sons of WWE Hall of Famer Rikishi but blazed their own paths to becoming one of WWE’s most endearing teams. Their fast-paced offense and outlandish personalities carved a niche with audiences, and they broke out into popularity following a pre-show match at Money in the Bank 2013 with The Shield.
They would become powerhouses in the tag division, winning the tag titles nine times and main eventing Night 1 of WrestleMania 39 with Sami Zayn in Kevin Owens. The match is the first time the tag team titles ever headlined WrestleMania. Their success in The Bloodline faction cemented them as future Hall of Famers.
6. The Hart Foundation
Most people know Bret “The Hitman” Hart as one of the greatest technical wrestlers ever, but his days in The Hart Foundation with Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart helped put him on the radar of wrestling fans across the world.
The Hart Foundation won the WWE Tag Team Championship twice, and would go on to have notable feuds with The Rockers, Demolition, and the British Bulldogs. The squad memorably won the tag titles at SummerSlam in 1990, defeating Demolition in a two-out-of-three falls match that arguably stole the show. They were critical in solidifying the tag division during one of its weaker stretches in WWE, and their run laid the foundation for Hart to become a star.
7. The Road Warriors
The Road Warriors (or as they were known in WWE, the Legion of Doom) were monster stars in tag team wrestling across the industry throughout the 1980s and 1990s, earning some of the loudest fan reactions possible. While they are known more for their outside endeavors, there’s no doubt they made an impact in WWE.
The WWE Hall of Famers were two-time tag team champions in WWE, making the jump in 1990 and going to battle with Demolition in a war of lookalikes. Hawk and Animal were extremely popular with WWE crowds and made one of the most iconic entrances in WWE history on motorbikes at SummerSlam in 1992. They returned in the late 1990s in a more forgettable run, but their legacy stands strong to this day.
8. Demolition
Many believe Demolition was created as a ripoff of the Road Warriors, and they would probably be right. Ax and Smash’s ring attire bore a resemblance to that of Hawk and Animal, and their intensity matched as well. Even so, Demolition was extremely popular in the late-1980s.
Ax and Smash held the record for the longest tag title reign in WWE history for more than two decades at 478 days. They were three-time champions, and played an integral role in WWE expanding nationally in the post-WrestleMania era. They would eventually add Crush to the mix, but the duo dominance of Ax and Smash remains a fond memory for many WWE fans.
9. The New Age Outlaws
Oh, you didn’t know? The New Age Outlaws undoubtedly belong on the list of greatest WWE tag teams, as they were among the company’s most beloved acts of its most popular era.
Billy Gunn and Road Dogg formed officially as a duo in October of 1997, and were the perfect dynamic for one another. Gunn was an elite athlete with excellent size, while Rod Dogg was the definition of entertainment in and out of the ring. They were WWE tag champs a total of six times, with an unexpected run coming in the mid-2010s as members of The Authority. Their ability to captivate crowds was a highlight of WWE shows in the 1990s, though, and they were two of the most featured members of D-Generation X during the Attitude Era.
10. The Brothers of Destruction
Almost everyone knows The Undertaker and Kane as two of the most dominant singles stars of the 1990s and 2000s in WWE, but their story over the years also made them perfect partners.
Kane broke into WWE in 1997 as the brother of The Undertaker, trying to exact revenge on him for their eclectic family dynamic. While they would feud for a few years, they would also team together on several occasions and had an emphatic run as tag champs in 2001 during the Invasion storyline with WCW and ECW. They would also feud with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Triple H in a battle of behemoths, adding a new dynamic to the WWE main event picture. Altogether, they won the tag titles three times.
